Factor in the challenges of rising inflation, labor challenges, water crisis and a rollercoaster milk market, somedays we feel like the challenges outweigh the opportunities. 2022 made us wonder if the recession bubble will ever bust and if the significant rising costs will ever decrease.
A few years ago, when faced with a world pandemic, many questioned their profession. Although, it did shed a light on the fact that the world needs farmers. The previous U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Sunny Purdue, once said, “Sure seeing empty shelves across America is unsettling, but what would be worse is seeing empty barns and fields across America.”
While U.S. dairy farms represent a very small percentage of the total population, be reminded that farmers are true champions. You all have plowed deep and persevered when faced with adversity. Not too long ago, I walked into our employee breakroom and Queen’s hit song, “We are the Champions,” came on the radio. My smile widened, as I thought it was appropriate to have this song blare this tune, as indeed farmers are the champions.
While dairy farmers might not sport a championship ring, don’t be fooled because you all are a source of inspiration, showcasing anything is possible when it is combined with faith, determination and hard work. I’m inspired daily when I witness my husband, Scott, rise early and work late. Like many of you, Scott demonstrates the true meaning of sacrifice, commitment and purpose and you all are part of the 2% club that proudly produces food for the world.
Pause long enough when you splash water on your face in the morning, to look up and see your reflection. The reflection of a true champion, especially as you continue to put your best foot forward despite the odds facing you.
Mitch Albom once wrote that perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did. Continue to persevere. The world needs true champions. The champion of an American farmer.
