The City of Plymouth intends to sell the Cheese Counter and Dairy Heritage Center, 133 E. Mill St., to the Plymouth Cheese Counter Foundation Inc., a nonprofit led by Sargento Foods, Sartori Cheese and Masters Gallery Foods.
The foundation aims to preserve the space’s history, culture and educational experience.
“This move will establish a new operational model for the Cheese Counter and Dairy Heritage Center and allow us to expand the historical curation and educational aspects visitors have come to enjoy,” Lee Gentine, chairperson of the Plymouth Redevelopment Authority and one of the nonprofit founders, said in a news release.
The Cheese Counter and Dairy Heritage Center has a museum and sells locally crafted cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches and themed souvenirs in the spirit of the downtown’s history.
Plymouth Mayor Don Pohlman said the city is “thrilled” for the new partnership and vision for the space.
“To have the support of three great companies to maintain the heritage of our city in an inviting and engaging space demonstrates our shared goal of ensuring the story of Plymouth continues to be told for generations,” he said.
The city intends to sell the space for $1 after buying the building back earlier this year from the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation, which had a six-year ownership to qualify for redevelopment incentives.
Plymouth will continue to contribute $7,500 annually to the Cheese Counter and Dairy Heritage Center to recognize its contribution to the city as a tourist attraction, a news release said.
