As of May 24th, the farm bill has officially passed out of the House Agriculture Committee. So, does this mean the 2024 farm bill is going into effect? Not even close.

There is a long path for our next farm bill that will fund our farm and food programs for the next five years. Seeing that the House Ag Committee passed their version of the bill, now it is the Senate Ag Committee’s turn. Once that happens, both versions of the bill will be sent to a conference committee which is made up of a small group of senators and representatives.

This group will take both versions of the bill and compromise to make one singular farm bill. From there, the next step will be to pass through the house and the senate. Then finally, it will go to the president’s desk for final approval.

So, this farm bill has a long road of many months of deliberation ahead of it before it becomes officials. But let’s focus back to this month as June is National Dairy Month.

Back in the 1930s, there was a surplus of milk. Farmers were producing too much milk which led to the price of the dairy product to go way down. In an effort to solve this surplus, in 1937 national milk month was established to promote drinking milk in the summer months.

Then two years later in 1939, the National Dairy Council stepped in and switched it to National Dairy Month to promote all dairy products, not just milk.

So, whether you prefer a classic glass of milk or a scoop of ice cream, be sure to milk this month for all its worth and incorporate some dairy in your diet to support our dairy farmers.
