MILK ORDER CHANGES OPEN TO PUBLIC COMMENT

Dairy farmers can now comment on USDA’s proposed changes to the Federal Milk Marketing Order.

Some amendments include returning the Class I skim milk price to the ‘higher-of’ formula, adjusting milk composition factors, and raising the Class III and Class IV make allowances for cheese, butter, nonfat dry milk, dry whey, and butterfat recovery.

American Farm Bureau Federation says it’s disappointed in changes that are not based on a mandatory, audited survey of processors’ costs.

Changes are expected to be made final this fall by USDA and will go to producers for a vote.

Farmers have been calling for updates to the order since 2021.
