July milk production down on year

U.S. milk production declined slightly in July 2024.

The USDA says production in the top 24 milk states was 18.171 billion pounds, 0.2% less than in July 2023, with a 2 pound rise in average production per cow to 2,047 pounds canceled out by a slight decline in the number of cows being milked, from 8.909 million head to 8.878 million head.

Total U.S. milk production was 18.915 billion pounds, 0.4% below a year ago.

California claimed the top spot for production and herd size, followed by Wisconsin in both categories, while Michigan had the highest per cow average.

The USDA lowered its 2024 and 2025 milk production estimates in the most recent set of supply and demand numbers, with the next guess out September 12th.
