Farmer hopes for more trade agreements

A farmer and member of the Wisconsin Corn Promotion Board says now that the election is over, it’s time to get back to creating new trade agreements.

Shane Goplin tells Brownfield many countries were hesitant to create new trade deals. “The world was on a wait-and-see, and it wasn’t just the U.S. that had the election this year, it was half of the world’s population. Seven out of ten most-populous countries.”

And that includes neighboring Mexico, who is the number one customer of the United States.

Goplin says with high production costs and tight margins, finding new export markets is vital. “We have to produce that much more corn per acre to try and pay our bills, and the bottom line is we produce a lot more grain-in-all-forms than we consume in America.”

Goplin says President-elect Trump has a track record on trade, but there are still many unanswered questions about what lies ahead for agricultural trade.  He says American farmers are lucky to have people like the U.S. Grains Council with boots on the ground working to increase U.S. ag exports.
