Experts reveal which cheese varieties can benefit liver health and promote a balanced lipid metabolism.

People rarely consider cheese one of the healthiest foods because of its high fat and calorie content. However, in some cases, it can be far more beneficial than we think.

Certain cheeses offer significant health benefits, especially for the liver, as reported by Le Journal des Femmes. People often misunderstand dairy products, including cheese. Not all dairy products should be grouped together.

“Strangely, milk and its associated products were once considered noble foods. Today, animal-based dairy products like cheese have a bad reputation. However, they are mostly the foods that contain the most calcium, a mineral essential for bone and tooth formation, blood clotting, nerve conduction, and hormone release. They are also great for people with a congested or tired liver because a malfunctioning liver can no longer store vitamins and minerals like vitamin D or calcium, deficiencies of which are harmful at all levels,” says Professor Patrick Marcellin, a hepatologist at Beaujon Hospital, as reported by our colleagues.

Which Cheese Can Benefit Your Liver?

Several scientific studies have confirmed the protective role of dairy products, particularly cheese, on liver health. Research in Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases showed dairy improves blood lipid profiles, lowering triglycerides and cholesterol. This reduces liver fat accumulation, lowering the risk of liver diseases like NAFLD. By promoting a balanced lipid metabolism, cheese, when consumed in moderation, can become an unexpected ally for liver health.

However, not all cheeses provide the same benefits. Professor Marcellin recommends consuming cheese in moderation: “Cheese should be eaten in moderation – one to two 30-gram servings per day at most – and it’s better to choose cheeses low in fat. The best cheese for the liver is fresh goat cheese or sheep’s cheese (such as Petit Billy, Soignon, Chavroux, P’tit Basque), but ricotta (sometimes called “brousse” or “brocciu” in Corsica), cancoillotte, or cottage cheese are also good options as they are lower in cholesterol.”

These smart choices can help you enjoy cheese’s benefits without overloading your body.

How to Protect Your Liver Health

While cheese can be an ally for health, good liver health relies on a broader approach. Balanced meals, divided into smaller portions to ease liver strain, are essential. You should reduce foods that are too fatty or sugary, as they complicate digestion.

Regular physical activity is, of course, vital to complement a healthy lifestyle. By including moderate portions of low-fat cheeses in a varied diet, you can enjoy both the pleasure of taste and the benefits for your health.
