Wisconsin’s milk production declined 0.3% to 2.58 billion pounds in November 2024 compared to the same month last year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported Thursday.

The state’s dairy herd decreased by 4,000 head from November 2023 to 1.27 million cows. Monthly production per cow held steady at 2,035 pounds compared to last year.

California remained the nation’s top milk-producing state with 2.96 billion pounds, followed by Wisconsin, Texas at 1.42 billion pounds, Idaho at 1.35 billion pounds, and New York at 1.30 billion pounds. However, California saw a significant drop of 9.2% in production from the previous year.

Nationally, milk production in the 24 major dairy states totaled 17.2 billion pounds, down 0.8% from November 2023. The number of milk cows increased by 32,000 head from last year to 8.92 million, though this was 2,000 fewer than October 2024. Production per cow averaged 1,925 pounds for November, 22 pounds below November 2023.
