DAFM | DAFM issues reminder about important end of year deadlines

As the end of the year is fast approaching, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) has reminded farmers of some important deadlines.

The department has said that movements of organic manures in 2024 must be declared by the exporter no later than December 31, 2024.

To be considered valid, these movements must be verified by the importer by January 14, 2025.

The department said that with the exception of a limited number of justified cases, such as a herdowner passing away, declaration and verification of these movements must be done online via the Agfood.ie portal.

DAFM has also issued a reminder to farmers to submit their 2024 temporary movement of animals for grazing records and/or short-term land rental agreements.

Farmers that completed forms regarding the temporary movement of animals for grazing during 2024 (Record 4) or short-term land rental agreements relating to 2024 (Record 5) must be submitted by December 31, 2024.

These forms can either be emailed or posted to the department’s nitrates section which is based in Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford.

The department added that only accepted proof of postage is a swift post receipt or a registered post receipt.

Meanwhile, the department has noted that a “small minority” of dairy farmers have not confirmed their herd’s dairy cow band for 2024.

As a result, these herds are currently defaulted to the highest excretion rate band of 106kg N/cow/year for 2024 in accordance with the nitrates regulations.

DAFM said that this band will remain applicable for these herds, unless the herd owner confirms that a different 2024 excretion rate band is appropriate for their herd by December 31, 2024.

For almost all farmers, a dairy band for 2024 can be confirmed online via the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) website.

However, for those who have not consented to their milk data being shared with ICBF, a manual form is available to download on the department’s website at: www.gov.ie/nitrates

If a manual return is being used, it must be submitted by e-mail or by post to department’s nitrates section.
