Ministry of Social Development partners with Agricademy to train and place entrants into the industry.
Agricademy and the Ministry of Social Development are partnering to get more Kiwis interested in jobs on dairy farms.
MSD jobseeker candidates are being offered a pathway into the dairy industry by enrolling in a short online taster course for dairy farming.
If they complete the course and want to begin a career on a dairy farm, they can then enrol in another online course that teaches them about the tasks and duties of a dairy assistant.
Once completed, jobseekers will receive a Dairy Assistant Certificate for their CV when applying for jobs.
Agricademy will post those jobseekers who complete the course on its job candidate board. Farmers can register and communicate with candidates.
Where needed, the MSD will support job seekers with relocation costs and provide a package of work clothing.
Alister Shennan, CEO and founder of Agricademy, said: “Labour shortages and high turnover have long been a feature of the dairy sector. The first six months are critical for the job, so our goal is to give new employees the knowledge and confidence to begin work on a dairy farm. They can do that safely online with our courses without the need to spend lengthy time in a classroom with traditional paper-based courses.”
Jane Muir from DairyNZ said: “Up to 250 new hires into the dairy industry each year come out of the MSD system. This programme will help improve the number, quality, and ability of New Zealanders to work on dairy farms by increasing their knowledge of the work and the opportunities that come from working on a dairy farm.”
Amanda Nicolle, MSD’s Director Industry Partnerships said: “Our goal is to give our job seekers the best possible opportunities to decide if this is the right career move for them and then support them as they get job ready. Knowing that a candidate has invested time and effort to get ready for employment will give farmers confidence.”
Enrolments in the full Dairy Assistant Course begin in February with the first candidates expected to be listed mid-February.
