Dubbed Ireland’s largest dairy farm, Greenhills Farm, located in east Cork, has entered into solar farm lease with renewable energy giant Orsted.
The collaboration, which sees Orsted lease land on the farm for renewable energy production, has been rumoured for months in the region.
The Browne family has built Greenhills into one of the country’s leading dairy operations, with a herd of over 1,000 cows and a reputation for cutting-edge farming techniques.
As part of this partnership, Orsted plans to develop a 250MW solar project on the land, capable of powering over 52,000 homes annually.
Tom, Elizabeth and Simon Browne, who manage Greenhills, spent decades building the farm – expanding it from its early days with just a few hundred cows.
In 2017, Greenhills farm hit a major milestone, reaching 1,046 cows and employing advanced technologies like a 60-unit rotary parlour and a highly efficient milking system.
However, as farming evolves, the Brownes are now turning their attention to sustainability and renewable energy. “We are proud to have built a reputation as a leader in Irish dairy, and now we are excited to play a role in providing reliable renewable energy generation,” Tom Browne said.
Orsted’s vice-president of onshore business in Ireland and the UK, TJ Hunter, emphasised the importance of this partnership.
“A landowner lease agreement is a significant milestone, but it is also a very early step in developing a renewable energy project,” he said. “We are engaging with a forward-thinking team at Greenhills, and we look forward to the planning process. This area boasts some of the country’s best solar energy conditions, and the project could power thousands of homes.”
The Greenhills farm is particularly well-suited for solar energy generation due to its location in east Cork, which enjoys excellent conditions for solar power.
With an impressive pipeline of renewable energy projects, Orsted is helping Ireland move closer to its ambitious 8GW solar energy target by 2030.
The decision to partner with Orsted aligns with Greenhills’ ongoing efforts to embrace sustainability.
As the farm continues to grow and innovate, the Browne family sees this partnership as a natural extension of their commitment to the environment and future generations.
