Several state legislative issues are high priorities for Wisconsin’s dairy farmers, but they will have to lobby for them another day.
Wednesday was supposed to be the day where members of the Dairy Business Association visited with lawmakers about issues important to the industry, but DBA’s Chad Zuleger tells Brownfield the weather prevented that from happening. “We have postponed our event due to some scheduling conflicts within the legislature and, if you take a look outside, you can see that the weather is really great so a lot of our members were really itching to get in the field.”
So with sunshine and temperatures in the 50s, the tractors are rolling, but Zuleger will continue to push for the group’s priorities as the Legislature gets busy writing the biennial budget. “We’ve got a slate of issues we were excited to talk to lawmakers and their staffs about today. Obviously, the Agriculture Road Improvement Program is still first and foremost in our member’s minds.”
Also, the Dairy Business Association would like the state to require accurate labeling for plant-based dairy alternatives, raise the acreage cap on Wisconsin’s Ag Enterprise Areas to three million acres, and continue to fund the Dairy Processing Grant Program. DBA would also like to see the legislature double funding for the state’s Agriculture Exports Program and make the state’s Nitrogen Optimization Pilot Program permanent.
