The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is reporting no cases of bird flu in its dairy cattle or milk supply.

The WSDA said in a release that Washington is one of only seven states with Stage 4 status in the National Milk Testing Strategy (NMTS) program, meaning it is officially recognized as unaffected by bird flu after extensive testing and surveillance.

Since November 2024, inspectors have collected monthly milk samples from dairy producers across the state to ensure the absence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), the release said.

Milk samples from all 237 dairy farms were tested at the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Washington State University in Pullman.

“This effort wasn’t easy. It took coordination, logistics and support from many producers.” Gena Reich, WSDA’s Food Safety and Consumer Services Policy and Performance Administrator said.
