Federated Farmers challenges Greenpeace’s tactics at Ravensdown plant, citing health and safety violations and seeking regulatory accountability.

Federated Farmers has lodged a formal complaint with WorkSafe New Zealand against Greenpeace following a protest at Ravensdown’s Dunedin fertiliser plant. The farmers’ organization claims the activists’ actions posed significant safety risks, especially by climbing industrial structures and interfering with operations. The protest aimed to highlight environmental concerns but has sparked strong backlash from the farming sector.

Wayne Langford, president of Federated Farmers, argued that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, the tactics employed by Greenpeace were “reckless and dangerous.” He emphasized that industrial sites like Ravensdown’s carry inherent risks and that unauthorized access not only endangers activists but also workers and emergency responders.

Greenpeace protesters reportedly blocked access to the plant and displayed banners urging a halt to synthetic fertiliser use due to environmental impacts. However, Federated Farmers insists such demonstrations must adhere to workplace safety laws. The group said it filed the complaint to ensure future protests don’t set precedents that undermine workplace health and safety standards.

Ravensdown also responded, calling the protest disruptive and highlighting its own ongoing environmental initiatives. The company emphasized its commitment to sustainability, including efforts to reduce nitrogen runoff and collaborate with farmers on improving land management practices.

The incident has reignited debate around climate activism, agricultural sustainability, and the line between advocacy and endangerment. As regulatory authorities investigate the complaint, both sides remain firm in their positions, spotlighting growing tensions between farming communities and environmental groups in New Zealand’s agricultural landscape.
