May sees milk collections soar 8%, driven by spring growth and cow performance.

New Zealand’s dairy industry surged to five-year highs in May, with total milk production rising sharply compared to the same month last year. Data from Farmers Weekly shows a notable 8% year-over-year increase, marking the most robust monthly output recorded since 2020.

This resurgence reflects strong spring conditions that fueled pasture growth and early calving. Production exceeded forecasts as grass-fed herds capitalized on favourable seasonal weather, pushing milk yield to record levels for the current dairy year .

The spike leverages cumulative improvements in herd genetics, animal welfare, and pasture management. These enhancements led to more milk solids per cow—a trend underpinning the production boom and offering stability ahead of summer dry spells .

However, farmers are watching closely as cost pressures persist. Rising inputs and environmental constraints pose risks to margin sustainability, even amid rising volumes. The current growth may help offset those challenges if managed efficiently.

Looking ahead, the industry anticipates slower growth through the drier months before calving cycles inject more supply. Stakeholders are optimistic that momentum will continue into the next dairy season, provided seasonal conditions and input costs remain supportive.
