Cargill | Open Country Dairy's new holding tank highlights expansion plans

A literal big sign of Open Country Dairy's expansion rolled through Invercargill this week as a new milk storage silo made its way to the company's Awarua site.

Company chairman Laurie Margrain said the tank was part of expansion plans which involve building a third spray drier.
The 400,000 litre silo is just one component.
The third drier is expected to be operational for the 2020/2021 dairy season.
The spray driers convert milk into milk powder, which is then exported.
The tank made for an impressive sight as it passed through parts of the city’s central business district.
It measures in at 18 and a half metres long, six metres round and can hold 400,000L.
It was built by NDA Engineering in Invercargill.
NDA Engineering site manager Joe Timpany said it was not the biggest project they’ve built.
But moving something so large took a bit of coordination, he said.
“It’s not something the average farmer down the road rings up and wants.”
