A dairy economist says the COVID 19 pandemic has changed the sales trend for fluid milk.

Mark Stephenson with the University of Wisconsin says fluid milk sales had been declining for a decade, but now, “About two-thirds of fluid milk is consumed at home historically, or at least in recent history, and since we’re staying at home, we’ve found that actually, fluid sales are up.”

Stephenson says early in the pandemic, there were shortages of milk in stores, but the supply chain adjusted. He says one way was by reducing the number of choices and focusing on gallons and half gallons of whole and two percent milk.

Stephenson spoke recently during an Iowa State University economics webinar.
