Former chair of the IFA dairy committee Tom Phelan has been elected to replace Martin Keane on the Glanbia board.

Former chair of the IFA dairy committee and Laois-based dairy farmer Tom Phelan has been elected to the board of Glanbia Co-op.

Phelan will fill the seat that recent board chair Martin Keane is vacating.

The election, which took place on Wednesday night, was keenly contested, with Phelan seeing off competition from two other candidates.

Phelan stepped down as IFA dairy chair after he was elected to the Glanbia council earlier this month in the Donoughmore-Monasterevin region.

His IFA position has been filled by vice-chair Stephen Arthur.

In the Castlelyons area in Co Cork, Patsy Ahern saw off competition for his post from Shane Fitzgerald.
