And processors are keenly aware of the renewed competition in the market – upping their opening prices in a bid to retain their existing supply base and lure new farmers to the fold.

Under the new dairy code, processors had to declare their opening minimum price by June 1st – a month before the season starts.

And that’s giving dairy farmers a lot more choice, at a time when they’ve become a lot less likely to stay loyal to one particular company.

A state government has laid down the law to the overseas owners of a well-known Australian brand, accusing the firm of wanting to shut it down.
