Detection of cereulide toxin prompts US recall, raising quality control concerns in global dairy supply chains.
New Zealand-based a2 Milk has initiated a voluntary recall of three batches of its a2 Platinum infant formula in the United States after detecting cereulide, a toxin capable of causing severe gastrointestinal illness. The move affects products sold under the USA label, triggering immediate action across retail channels.
The company confirmed that cereulide, a bacterial toxin linked to vomiting, nausea, and diarrhoea, was identified through additional testing protocols. Despite the potential health risks, no confirmed cases of illness in infants have been reported in connection with the affected batches.
The recall covers a total of 63,078 tins, with approximately 16,428 already sold to consumers. The product was manufactured by Synlait Milk Limited, which indicated that the formula had already been discontinued prior to the recall announcement.
Importantly, a2 Milk clarified that the issue is isolated to the US-specific formulation and does not impact its a2 Platinum infant formula products sold in other markets, including Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Vietnam, and China. This distinction aims to reassure international customers and protect broader brand integrity.
From a dairy industry perspective, the incident underscores the critical importance of food safety, traceability, and rigorous testing standards in high-value dairy segments such as infant nutrition. While the companies involved do not expect a material financial impact, the recall highlights reputational risks and the need for robust quality assurance systems in global dairy supply chains.
