The farming industry is experiencing drastic changes and family farms are being forced to close as the price of milk stays low.
The Tessier farm in Donalds spends about $17 to make 100 pounds of milk.
But Dairy Farmers of America is paying the farm about $14 for that same amount.
In May, the Tessiers sold most of their cows. Now the equipment and the farm itself will follow.
“You can stand it for a while but after a while you get into savings and then you start borrowing money. It’s just a downhill slide,” said farmer Dale Tessier.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2017 the national average price of milk per 100 pounds was $17.70.
In 2018, the price dropped to $16.30.
