
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is inviting submissions on the proposed purchase by French dairy giant Lactalis of parts of the Fonterra Co-operative group of businesses.
BSA S.A.S. (Lactalis) proposes to acquire Fonterra’s consumer business globally as well as the group’s dairy ingredients and food services businesses in Australia.
Lactalis sources raw milk from about 500 farmers in Queensland, NSW, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia.
It supplies products under brand names including Pauls, Vaalia and Kraft.
Fonterra is a New Zealand-based dairy co-operative which sources its supplies from about 650 farmers in Victoria, Tasmania and parts of South Australia and NSW. Its brands include Mainland, Western Star and Perfect Italiano, and it also holds the licence for Bega natural and processed cheddar cheese products.
