A strike affecting 250 employees of the Saint-Laurent factory in Montreal was called by the Agropur union on Monday.

Despite the recommendations of their union, the employees refused an offer presented to them yesterday afternoon and decided to exercise their right to strike.

“We are surprised by the decision, but what is important for us is to continue to discuss and resume activities as quickly as possible,” says Mylène Dupéré, vice-president of communications at Agropur.

It is currently the managers in office who ensure the milk is removed from the silos to redirect it to other factories and thus avoid waste.

The collective agreement for employees of Agropur’s Saint-Laurent plant had expired in September and the discussions “were going well” according to Ms. Dupéré .

She also assures that discussions will continue with the union.

This is on top of an investment of €18,060 for extra soiled water storage and additional calf housing over the past ten years, based on a typical 100 cow dairy farm.
