Danish cooperative doubles Swedish capacity to capture protein demand and boost self-sufficiency.

Northern Europe’s largest dairy cooperative, Arla Foods, has unveiled its largest-ever investment, committing approximately €300 million ($350 million) to expand cheese production capacity in Sweden. The farmer-owned group will construct a new dairy facility at its existing site in Götene, signaling a long-term strategic push into value-added cheese amid shifting global dairy market dynamics.

Once operational in 2030, the new plant is expected to process around 1 billion kilograms (2.2 billion pounds) of milk annually — effectively doubling the site’s current throughput. The expansion reflects growing global demand for protein-rich foods and whey, a key byproduct of cheese manufacturing increasingly sought after in food and nutrition markets.

The announcement comes at a time when Arla anticipates lower revenues this year due to falling dairy prices. However, the cooperative — which represents 7,600 farmer-members across Europe — believes softer price levels could encourage consumers to shift toward premium branded dairy products, a segment the company projects could grow by up to 3%.

Production at the new facility will center on Arla’s Household cheese, one of Sweden’s most recognized retail dairy brands. By scaling domestic manufacturing, the cooperative aims to strengthen its branded portfolio while reinforcing its competitive position in the Scandinavian cheese market.

Beyond corporate growth, the investment carries national supply chain implications. Arla estimates the new capacity will lift Sweden’s cheese self-sufficiency ratio from 37% to approximately 47%, reducing reliance on imports and enhancing domestic dairy resilience. For dairy producers and analysts, the move underscores how strategic processing investments can reshape regional milk utilization, protein markets and long-term dairy trade flows.
