Global Dairy Trade (GDT) has confirmed that Arla Foods will begin offering European-sourced skim milk powder (SMP) on the GDT Pulse platform from next month.
Launched in August 2022 by GDT and Fonterra, GDT Pulse is a pilot service offering shorter, more frequent online auctions to complement GDT events.
These auctions typically last 10–20 minutes and provide additional price discovery for core dairy commodities.
Fonterra currently offers SMP, whole milk powder (WMP) regular and instant.
Arla’s inclusion as the first additional seller is seen as “a major step in broadening the platform’s reach”. Arla’s first GDT Pulse auction is scheduled for May 12.
The co-op has been a GDT participant since 2012 and has taken part in over 300 trading events.
Thomas Carstensen, senior vice president of Arla Foods, said that “joining GDT Pulse is a natural evolution of our sales strategy”.
“It allows us a flexible new way to connect with customers and offer our products more frequently.
“We’re pleased to be part of this development and look forward to seeing how it supports our global buyers,” he added.
Justin Matijasevich,interim chief executive of Global Dairy Trade, said they were “excited to welcome Arla to GDT Pulse”.
“Their participation will expand opportunities for buyers and add further momentum to the GDT Pulse pilot,” he said.

Last week, Arla Foods and the German-based DMK Group announced a proposed merger aiming to create “the strongest dairy cooperative in Europe”.
The move would bring together more than 12,000 farmers and would aim to achieve a combined revenue of €19 billion.
The merger is subject to approval from the boards in the respective co-ops, as well as regulatory approval.
If approved, the newly merged entity will carry the Arla name, and its headquarters will be based in Denmark.
Arla Foods has reported revenue of €13.8 billion and a milk volume of 13.7 billion kilogrammes, while revenue at DMK Group, the largest dairy co-op in Germany, stood at €5.1 billion, with 5.3 billion kilogrammes in milk volume.
