Change is Good Dairy Market sees quick turnover

There’s turnover at Charlottesville’s only food hall, but management says “change is good.”

In the past few weeks, the Dairy Market has lost multiple businesses.

“Citizen Burger was very successful while it was here, but management had other plans,” manager Anna Payne said.

However, when stalls close, they don’t stay empty for long.

“We’re always sad when a merchant leaves, but everybody has their own hopes, dreams, and endeavors that they want to pursue, and we’re trying to stay up with the change,” said Payne.

Payne added that the Dairy Market is moving toward more long-term leases. “The size of the stall will determine the cost of their rent. Some people come in wanting to stay for a couple of years, while others want to be here short-term. We’re trying to move toward those who want to stay for three, four, five years or longer.”

Citizen Burger is becoming a French-style coffee shop; 434th Street is turning into a burger joint; and South and Central is becoming a duckpin bowling and darts area. The Market is also adding a kids’ play area, 50 more seats, and free parking.

“We want people to come here and not worry about having to leave after an hour because of parking fees. We want them to come, sit for a while, and enjoy themselves. The new tables inside even have charging stations. So, if you need to get some work done or want to have a working lunch, no problem,” Payne said, “We view this as new growth for the Dairy Market and for the community.”
