Cheese toasties are about to be a lot cheaper after a supermarket giant slashed the price of a popular fridge item.

One of Australia’s biggest supermarkets has slashed the price of 1kg cheese blocks to help shoppers stay on top of their weekly budget as the cost of living bites.

Coles will reduce the price of the popular household staple by $4.40 from $13.90 to $9.50.

The 12 week deal kicking off from Wednesday is fully funded by Coles to ensure dairy farmers are not out of pocket.

The price drop comes as more than 40 per cent of Coles customers revealed they prefer to buy a block cheese over sliced or shredded cheese, in a survey conducted by the supermarket.

All types of the cheese including colby, tasty cheddar and Australian light tasty cheddar will be reduced as part of Coles’ “down down” price reductions.

Coles chief commercial officer Anna Croft said Coles is “committed” to ensuring customers save on their weekly grocery budget at the checkout.

“We are absolutely committed to lowering the cost of everyday essentials for our customers and have further invested to put another family staple in our Down Down pricing range to offer greater value for longer,” Mr Croft said.

“We know the humble cheese block is a family favourite and very versatile to have on hand, from sliced and diced in family lunches and grated in cheesy bakes to enjoying on its own with some crackers.”

More than four million kilograms of the Coles cheese block are sold every year, with one in three Australians revealing their favourite way to eat the cheese is on a cheese toastie.

The coles brand cheese is made in Cobram, Victoria, by Saputo Dairy Australia.
