Cow-Tech Startup Halter Hits Unicorn Status

New Zealand’s Halter raises $100M to fuel U.S. dairy tech expansion with smart collars and virtual herd control.

New Zealand-based agtech company Halter has achieved unicorn status after securing $100 million in Series D funding, pushing its valuation to $1 billion. The startup’s innovative cattle management system has attracted high-profile investors such as Bond, NewView, Bessemer Venture Partners, and DCVC, positioning Halter as one of the few standout success stories in the global agtech sector amid a sluggish funding climate.

Halter’s platform integrates GPS-enabled smart collars, wireless connectivity towers, and a mobile app to allow farmers to manage their herds remotely. By using sound and vibration cues, the system helps optimize grazing patterns and minimize environmental impact. This technology is especially relevant as dairy farmers increasingly look to automation to counter labor shortages and drive productivity.

The company has already partnered with about 150 ranchers across 18 U.S. states and plans to use its new capital to accelerate growth in the American dairy sector. Halter’s expansion strategy is centered around supporting small and medium farms, offering them tools to improve efficiency without requiring large labor forces on-site.

CEO and founder Craig Piggott emphasized the urgency of automating livestock management in the U.S., where over half of ranchers are aged 55 or older, and workforce shortages are being exacerbated by immigration policies. Halter’s technology is designed to empower aging farm populations and smaller teams by reducing the need for constant physical herd supervision.

As immigration crackdowns continue to strain the U.S. agricultural labor market, Halter presents a high-tech alternative that aligns with modern dairy farming needs. The company’s rapid rise and global ambition underscore the growing demand for smart farming solutions that boost both operational resilience and sustainability.
