Iowa’s Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award Recognizes Bremer County Dairy Leaders for Conservation and Community Advocacy 🏅.
The Ebaugh family of Ebaugh Dairy Farms has made history in Iowa, becoming the first recipient of the prestigious Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award in Bremer County. Presented by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig on September 18 at their family farm, the award recognizes their exceptional dedication to environmental stewardship, animal care, and community leadership. This recognition highlights the critical role multi-generational dairy operations play in building a positive public image for the entire livestock sector.
Ebaugh Dairy is a diversified, fourth-generation operation run by Jeremy and Sara Ebaugh alongside their three sons: John, Joe, and Jeb. The farm is a complex, integrated agricultural business, featuring Holstein dairy cows, a cow/calf herd, and chickens, in addition to cultivating diverse crops like corn, soybeans, hay, oats, and rye. Their primary dairy output—milk—is sold to the Wapsie Valley Creamery, while they also diversify revenue by marketing Holstein bull calves, eggs, and even St. Bernard puppies.
The family’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices is a core reason for the accolade. They have actively implemented no-till practices for over a decade, incorporating cover crops such as rye and oats to protect soil and enhance water quality. Furthermore, the farm uses manure exclusively for fertilizer, demonstrating a closed-loop system for nutrient management. The modernization of their dairy facilities, including a swing 16 herringbone parlor and sand freestalls, underscores their commitment to optimal animal care and efficiency.
Succession planning is actively underway, ensuring the farm’s future for a fifth generation. Sons John and Joe are already pursuing agricultural careers, with John establishing his own operation and Joe studying agricultural business at Upper Iowa University. They, along with their high-school-aged brother Jeb, are also lauded for their involvement in wrestling and FFA. The farm’s operations are also supported by dedicated employees and local students, underscoring their function as a training ground for the next wave of agricultural professionals.
Beyond the farm gate, the Ebaughs are tireless advocates for the dairy industry and agricultural education, serving on the Iowa Holstein Association and the Bremer County Dairy Promotion Board. Their efforts were instrumental in reinstating the Denver FFA chapter and driving fundraising for a new agriculture building, expanding hands-on learning opportunities for students. Secretary Naig summarized their contribution, stating the Ebaughs are “true champions in the barn, the field, and the wrestling room,” embodying the best of Iowa’s farming community.
