I haven't paid close attention to the Daley Farms issue regarding its desire to expand. However, a recent article (March 26) in the Winona Daily News (Minnesota farmer income plummets) illustrated the tough times our farmers are facing.

As stated in the article, “Farmers are struggling on several fronts. Dairy farmers are wrestling with overproduction, dropping prices and widespread consolidation.”
This then begs the question: If there’s overproduction (which aggravates already low prices), why then would the Daleys want to expand their herd?
Now, I have no idea as to how much money the Daleys make. However, the only reason I can fathom for expansion is to suffer through low prices by trying to make it up in volume. But that can be risky business; over-expansion to increase profits (especially if they’re small ones) has threatened or ruined many businesses.
