Farmer, Waimea Dam proponent and dairy leader Murray King has become a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the dairy industry.

King helped promote and develop the country’s dairy sector through multiple directorships, championing innovation and collaboration.

He chaired the Livestock Improvement Corporation from 2009 to 2023.

He has chaired Waimea Irrigators Ltd, the water users body formed to help establish the recently completed Waimea Dam since 2016.

It “felt very good” and was “very satisfying” to have the dam running, he said, as without it, water levels would be “probably very close to if not below the level” for significant rationing.

Last year, he became a trustee of the NZ Rural Leadership Trust and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the New Zealand Co-op awards.

King has spent around 30 years in the dairy industry, originally as a farm management consultant and then farming on his own account.

In that time the use of technology had been the biggest change, he said, with the use of devices such as automated cup removers and automated teat sprayers.

“It’s a lot easier to milk large herds of cows with few people,” he said.

King told Stuff he was honoured by the recognition.

“These things are a team effort … while I received this accolade there are many other people equally deserving if not more so. You don’t do these things by yourself.”
