Dairy Farmers of America has sold two processing plants it bought last year from Dean Foods.

The offloading of plants in De Pere, Wisconsin, and Harvard, Illinois, was required by a federal court as part of an antitrust proceedings brought by the attorneys general of Wisconsin and Massachusetts.

The plants were bought by a partnership of Select Milk Producers, which developed Fairlife ultrafiltered milk, and New Dairy Opco, an entity formed last July when investment groups purchased Borden Dairy out of bankruptcy.

DFA bought 44 plants as part of Dean’s own bankruptcy proceedings last spring. That purchase is believed to have made DFA both the nation’s largest producer and processor of milk.

The deal for the two plants was announced by Capstone Headwaters, an investment bank that facilitated the transaction. The bank did not announce the purchase price.

Keith Poulsen’s jaw dropped when farmers showed him images on their cellphones at the World Dairy Expo in Wisconsin in October.
