The dairy sector has seen a promising upward trend in milk production that is reflected in the latest U.S. Milk Production Report. Phil Plourd, president of Ever.Ag Insights, notes that while the headline numbers in the report might have fallen slightly short of expectations, the overall outlook remains optimistic, with a steady increase in milk production and cow numbers.
Milk Production Trends
The latest data reveals a notable increase in milk production. In March alone, milk production across the 24 major states reached a total of 19 billion lb., marking a 1% increase from the previous year. February’s figures, which showed a 2.4% decline to 17 billion lb., were recalibrated to show a small, yet significant increase of 26 million lb. or 0.2% from the initial estimate. This underscores the resilience and potential for growth within the dairy sector.
Cow Numbers and Production Per Cow
The increase in milk production is mirrored by an uptick in the number of milk cows. March figures show an average production of 2,125 lb. per cow in the primary dairy states, slightly surpassing March 2024 by 4 lb. The number of milk cows in these states climbed to 8.96 million head, a rise of 72,000 from the previous year and 9,000 more than February 2025.
“At day’s end, up is up. Milk production is on an upward trajectory, and we’ll see more in the months ahead with cow numbers up year-over-year and margins (on paper) still in an okay place,” Plourd says.
Plourd says the report reflects a growth trend that, while steady, might not drastically influence current trading perceptions or behaviors. Nonetheless, the upward trajectory in milk production, coupled with incremental cow population growth, demonstrates a robust foundation poised for further development in coming months. For stakeholders, these figures signify a stable and promising pathway, offering a balanced perspective of the sector’s future direction.
