Dairy producers need to voice their opinions about proposed changes to FMMO, according to one expert

A dairy specialist at Kansas State University is encouraging dairy producers to voice their opinions on proposed changes to all eleven Federal Milk Marketing Orders.

USDA is currently accepting public comment on the program which impacts the pricing of fluid milk products. Dairy producers have not seen changes in the critical orders since 2008, and Mike Brouk says that now is the time to weigh in and consider how it will impact your operation.

“There are many changes and some of those will bring some positive impacts to your milk check and others may or may not, depending on given market situations. Some of these we’re fairly excited about. For example, there has been some changes in how calculations are done based on the contents of solids in the milk. These again ahve not been updated for many years since 2008, and those were small changes.

So, it’s really time that based on the changes in the raw milk supply in the United States that we do make those changes. It’s also important to note that there are changes in how raw milk will be priced based on the prices that we’re receiving for different dairy products being manufactured out of that raw milk. So, there’s some substantial changes there I’d encourage you to spend some time learning what those changes are and how they might impact your dairy farm and your milk check,” he explains.

The comment period ends next week, with a final vote likely in early 2025.
