An organic dairy company in the Newark area will get state support through a pilot program that seeks to help Delaware businesses evolve and stay competitive in their industries.
The Modernization Investment Support Initiative was created last year, proposed by the Delaware Prosperity Partnership and Delaware Division of Small Business.
Natural Dairy Products Corporation near the UD campus has been approved for up to $858,000 to upgrade equipment, some of which is decades old. The woman-owned business plans a total of nearly $4.3- million to modernize and keep up with industry standards. Up to $5-million dollars from the Delaware Strategic Fund has been approved for the modernization initiative to be distributed to qualified applicants.
NDPC produces milk and dairy products and has expanded into plant-based products and juices, while supporting 22 organic dairy farms in the region. However, limitations posed by its aging equipment resulted in lost contracts, which led it to reduce production and cut full-time positions from 24 to 21.
“In the past few years our team became very aware that adding shelf life to our fluid products through modernizing our equipment would be the key to our future growth and success,” current owner of Natural Dairy Products Corporation Stephanie McVaugh said.
“Agriculture is Delaware’s number one industry. Natural Dairy will use this grant to upgrade their equipment and stay competitive,” Governor John Carney said. “This is what the Modernization Investment Support Initiative is designed to do – help companies like Natural Dairy stay and grow in the First State.”
