CEO Miles Hurrell says the cooperative is “well positioned” to achieve a record farmgate milk price as global demand strengthens.
Fonterra’s chief executive, Miles Hurrell, remains confident the dairy giant can deliver a farmgate milk price close to NZ$10 per kilogram of milk solids this season. His optimism follows stronger demand trends in China and the Middle East, as well as improved commodity prices across global dairy markets. The company’s updated forecast currently sits between NZ$8.50 and NZ$10.00 per kilogram of milk solids, signaling potential for record returns if the market momentum continues.
Hurrell said Fonterra’s robust financial position, alongside prudent cost management and diversified export strategies, provides the cooperative with the resilience needed to sustain higher payouts. The cooperative’s balance sheet strength and reduced debt levels were key factors supporting confidence in the high-end forecast range.
Global dairy prices have recently shown signs of recovery, particularly for whole milk powder and butter, which remain core products for New Zealand exporters. China’s consumption rebound after a sluggish period has added optimism, while steady demand from Southeast Asia and the Middle East further reinforces the price outlook.
Despite the positive signals, Hurrell noted that market volatility remains a reality. Factors such as currency fluctuations, global economic uncertainty, and evolving trade conditions could still affect final payout levels. Nevertheless, he emphasized that Fonterra is better prepared to navigate these challenges than in previous years.
The cooperative will continue to monitor market developments and adjust its guidance accordingly, ensuring transparency for its farmer shareholders. Hurrell reiterated that achieving the upper end of the forecast range would represent a significant milestone for New Zealand’s dairy sector, reaffirming Fonterra’s position as a global leader in dairy exports.
