Mainland Group chief exits amid Lactalis deal to head Australian agriservices firm.

René Dedoncker, the chief executive of Fonterra’s soon-to-be divested Mainland Group, has been appointed to lead Australian agriservices company Elders. A long-time Fonterra executive since 2005, he most recently served as managing director of global markets consumer before taking charge of the consumer business that Fonterra agreed to sell to Lactalis for $4.2 billion.

Fonterra confirmed Dedoncker remains committed to guiding Mainland Group through the final phase of the transaction and transition to its new ownership. The cooperative expects the settlement of the Lactalis deal to be completed in the first quarter of the year, marking a significant structural shift in its global dairy portfolio.

Chief executive Miles Hurrell acknowledged Dedoncker’s contribution, highlighting his leadership during the divestment process and his role in sustaining performance while preparing the business for sale. The transition underscores broader strategic realignment within Fonterra as it refocuses on core operations and capital allocation.

At Elders, Dedoncker will succeed current CEO Mark Allison from October, following an extensive international and domestic recruitment process. Company chair Glenn Davis emphasized Dedoncker’s deep agricultural background, global operational expertise from Fonterra and Mars, and proven ability to drive strategic growth while maintaining strong regional relationships.

Dedoncker described the appointment as an honor and will begin the role with fixed remuneration of A$1.15 million, plus performance incentives and relocation support. Elders also holds a 12.4% stake in NZX-listed PGG Wrightson, positioning the leadership change within a broader trans-Tasman agribusiness landscape.
