After a catastrophic barn fire kills 21 dairy goats, the dairy community rallies nationwide to help a Tillamook producer rebuild.
A barn fire in Tillamook, Oregon devastated longtime dairy-goat farmer LeRoy Satter’s operation early Monday, claiming the lives of 21 baby goats and destroying the structure and essential farm equipment. The blaze, first noticed by a neighbor around 1:30 a.m., triggered a rapid response from local fire crews but left the barn a total loss.
The animals lost in the inferno weren’t just livestock to Satter and his wife Lorraine; they represented years of careful breeding. As a director with the American Dairy Goat Association, he focused on quality genetics for show and production, underscoring the economic and genetic loss the fire inflicted on his herd.
Firefighters from both Tillamook and Bay City spent more than eight hours battling the blaze. Preliminary damage estimates range between $350,000 and $400,000, reflecting the scale of structural and equipment loss on the farm. Authorities are investigating the cause, which Satter says may be electrical in nature.
In the wake of the fire, a GoFundMe campaign launched by a friend in the livestock community quickly spread through social media and dairy networks. More than $15,000 was raised online in just over 24 hours to support the couple’s recovery, highlighting solidarity within the agriculture and dairy goat sectors.
Supporters from across the U.S. praised Satter’s contributions to the goat farming world, with many describing him as a generous and dedicated breeder. The outpouring of support is aiding the couple emotionally and financially as they plan to rebuild infrastructure, replace essential supplies, and restock future breeding animals.
