Grants Boost Mental Health Support in Rural & Dairy Communities
FRRR is offering community grants up to $20,000.

FRRR opens up to $20K in community grants to improve mental wellbeing across remote farming regions.

The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) has announced that its In a Good Place (IAGP) program is offering a new round of community‐led grants of up to $20,000 to support mental health and wellbeing in remote, rural and regional areas, including farming communities where access to services and social connection can be limited. These grants are part of a broader $200,000 funding pool aimed at strengthening local capacity for mental wellbeing initiatives.

The funding is designed to help not-for-profit organisations and community groups develop and deliver projects that increase mental health education, build community connections and improve overall wellbeing. Priority is given to initiatives that help residents understand mental health issues, reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking behaviours, crucial in communities where isolation and distance from services can exacerbate stress.

FRRR head of granting Jill Karena highlighted the unique challenges faced by people living on rural properties or in small communities, where mental health support tends to be scarce and asking for help can be socially and logistically difficult. She noted that community-based groups are often best placed to deliver support because they are already embedded locally and trusted by residents.

The IAGP grants are split into two funding streams: one focused on broader community wellbeing projects, and the other specifically supporting farmers and farming communities. Past grant recipients have used their funding to train volunteers in mental health first aid, host local wellbeing events that foster social connection, bring in speakers to share personal mental health experiences, and create accessible safe spaces where locals can talk openly about mental health.

Applications for these mental health and wellbeing grants are currently open and close on February 19 at 5 pm. Successful projects will be announced in late June, and grantseekers can attend a free online workshop to learn more about applying. This initiative aligns with broader industry recognition of the importance of mental health support in agriculture, where isolation and economic pressures can impact producers’ and rural residents’ wellbeing.
