H5N1 INFECTS MINNESOTA DAIRY HERD

The H5N1 virus has been detected in a Minnesota dairy herd.  Minnesota’s Board of Animal Health confirms the herd is in Benton County northeast of St. Cloud.

Dr. Katie Cornille with the Minnesota Board of Animal Health tells Brownfield they don’t know how the H5N1 virus was introduced to the dairy farm.

A spokesman for the board says the farmer noticed a few cows with symptoms over the weekend, and it spread to more than 40 cows the next day.  Samples were collected Monday and confirmed as H5N1 late Wednesday.

The cows are expected to recover, and their milk is being disposed of.

Minnesota’s first confirmed case comes a day after Iowa’s first confirmed case in the northwestern corner of the state, but the two farms are more than four hours apart.
