Hawera’s famous cow statue has been vandalised.

A New Zealand police spokesperson said they received a report of that three people had jumped the fence beside Fonterra’s Whareroa plant and poured red paint on the cow, along with a sign saying “dairy kills” at around 3pm on Sunday.

It’s the second time in five years the much larger-than-life statue, which has stood at the intersection of SH3 and Whareroa Rd for almost 30 years, has been vandalised.

In August 2019, somebody attacked the cow, known locally as Olive, and removed her tail and teat with a power tool.

Fonterra has been approached for comment.
