The story of De Grins Oer Dairy began nearly three decades ago when Tjerk and Ramona Okkema immigrated from the Netherlands to the U.S. to pursue their passion for dairy farming. What started in 1999 with a modest herd of just seven cows has grown into a modern, family-operated dairy milking about 690 cows with a 40-stall rotary parlor and extensive crop acreage.

Family involvement is central to the farm’s success. Each member has a clearly defined role, from herd and crop management to community outreach and operations oversight. This collaborative structure, paired with advanced technologies like automated teat sprayers and real-time cow monitoring systems, has boosted herd health, operational efficiency, and overall dairy performance metrics.

Beyond daily operations, De Grins Oer Dairy engages strongly with research and education partners. The farm collaborates with Michigan State University and Michigan Milk Producers Association on research initiatives and workforce training, and hosts community outreach events that help bridge the gap between producers and the public — a key factor in its award recognition.
