Dairy producers are invited to participate.
PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. – Understanding lactation of dairy cows is the focus of a free program by University of Missouri Extension on Sept. 18.
“The bovine’s ability to convert feed into nutritious and delicious dairy products is awe-inspiring,” said Reagan Bluel, MU Extension field specialist in dairy. “The mammary gland houses millions of productive cells and complex ductwork. These anatomical features working in concert with the endocrine system allows the cow to provide for mankind.”
Dairy producers are invited to participate in an udder dissection and discussion of the attributes of the mammary gland 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at MU’s Fisher Delta Research, Extension and Education Center in Portageville.
“Learning the anatomy of the mammary will help producers be more effective at understanding, treating and preventing one of the costliest diseases in the dairy industry – mastitis,” said Bluel.
Throughout the dissection, Bluel will walk through the anatomical features, describing the “how” of milk production and sharing mastitis prevention and recommended treatment protocols.
