CANADIAN dairy company Saputo Inc has given its strongest indication it is interested in Lion Dairy and Drinks’ milk processing assets.

While its chief executive Lino Saputo would not categorically say it was bidding for all or part of the Japanese company’s dairy business, he indicated to The Weekly Times last week he was interested in some of its value-added lines.
Lion placed its dairy division on the market last year.
Saputo is believed to be interested in Lion’s cheese brands, which include Tasmanian Heritage, King Island Dairy and South Cape.
“There are a number of regions around the world where we still have an opportunity to grow,” Mr Saputo said.
“I am thinking about the United States, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.”
Mr Saputo said there were “some assets in Australia that do make some sense to us”.
“Cheese is in our wheelhouse,” he said.

This is on top of an investment of €18,060 for extra soiled water storage and additional calf housing over the past ten years, based on a typical 100 cow dairy farm.
