MSU Unveils New Research Center, Boosting State’s Top Agri Sector.

Michigan State University (MSU) has officially begun relocating its dairy cattle to the impressive new $75 million Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center in East Lansing, Michigan. On Monday, July 28, 2025, approximately 80 cows made the “moo-ve,” with the remaining 180 set to follow, marking a monumental upgrade from the university’s cramped 1960s-era farm. This state-of-the-art facility is set to redefine dairy research and education.

The previous dairy farm, limited by outdated space and equipment, had caused significant backlogs in crucial research, hindering advancements in milk production. The new 165,000-square-foot cattle barn will dramatically expand research capacity by accommodating a larger herd of up to 680 cows, which will arrive in phases over the coming weeks and months. This increased scale is vital for addressing complex challenges in dairy economics and animal welfare.

Designed with modernity in mind, the center features modernized barns, sophisticated feed centers, efficient milking parlors, and cutting-edge laboratories. These enhancements are specifically aimed at providing MSU students with hands-on training on the latest dairy cattle production techniques. This investment underscores a commitment to nurturing the next generation of dairy professionals for the agribusiness sector.

Funding for this ambitious project comes from a collaborative effort, with initial support from the State of Michigan, complemented by generous contributions from alumni, donors, and key dairy industry stakeholders. This broad financial backing highlights the collective belief in the future of Michigan’s dairy industry, which currently leads the nation in milk production per cow and stands as the state’s top agricultural economic contributor.

For the international dairy community, research institutions, and investors in agribusiness, MSU’s new Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center represents a significant leap forward. It showcases a powerful commitment to advancing dairy science, improving herd productivity, and ensuring the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of a vital food production sector through cutting-edge research and educational excellence.
