The farm’s success story traces back to founders Tjerk and Ramona Okkema, who launched the enterprise in 1999 after immigrating to the U.S. with a shared passion for dairy farming. Over two decades, the family has invested in a 40-stall rotary parlor and grown crops across roughly 1,800 acres to support herd nutrition. Today, the herd averages 32,230 pounds of milk with strong component levels and an exceptionally low somatic cell count, well below state benchmarks.

Innovation has been central to their operational strategy. De Grins Oer Dairy employs advanced technologies such as automated teat spray systems and activity-monitoring ear tags to enhance animal health and production efficiency. These systems, paired with a robust family team that allocates roles across herd care, feed management, administration, and outreach, have made the farm a model of modern dairy management.

Beyond production, the Okkemas have invested in training and community engagement. They employ around 15 staff who receive structured training in herd and equipment management, and partner with Michigan Milk Producers Association and MSU Extension for continuous improvement. Their focus on people development and animal welfare has strengthened both performance and workplace culture.
