Morgan County is a prominent agricultural county in the state of Georgia. A big part of agriculture in our community is the dairy industry. Morgan County is one of the top dairy counties in the state and is home to 6 family-owned and operated dairy farms.

According to the 2022 Georgia Farm Gate Report, Morgan County is ranked 4th in the state in total dairy production. The dairy industry in Morgan County is valued at $26,703,000.

Our county has 4,300 head of lactating cows. The rolling herd average for Morgan County is 23,000 lbs. A rolling herd average is the average amount of milk produced by the average cow in the herd for the last year. Besides the dollar value, our dairymen are recognized on other levels as well.

In January, Georgia Milk Producers INC, held their annual dairy conference in Savannah. During the Georgia Dairy Conference, awards are given across the state based on a dairy farm’s milk yield and milk quality. Three producers in Morgan County received both the Cream of the Crop award and the Georgia Quality Milk Award.

The Cream of the Crop dairy production award is based on the official DHIA (Dairy Herd Information Association) rolling herd average. The rolling herd average is how much milk was produced, on average, by a cow in a herd over a year. For example, Godfrey Dairy Farm averages 31,431 lbs. of milk per cow per year.

We are proud to recognize,

♦ Godfrey Dairy Farm — 1,124 Cows with 31,431 M& 1,216 F

♦ Danny Bell — 341 Cows with 31,784 M& 1,257 F

♦ WDairy, LLC — 2,072 Cows with 28,295 M& 1,273 F

♦ (Herd is milked three times a day)

The Georgia Quality Milk award has a requirement for the dairy farm to have a SCC average score of or below 2.2 or 220,000 somatic cells per ml. SCC stands for Somatic Cell Count. The lower the count, the higher the quality of milk, and the healthier the herd.

Danny Bell — 1.7 SCC Avg. Score

Godfrey Dairy Farm — 2.2 SCC Avg. Score

WDairy, LLC — 2.2 SCC Avg. Score

It is nice to see Morgan County dairy producers get acknowledged for the excellent job that they do every day. We would not be here without farmers. If you see a farmer, say, “Thank You!” They do not get enough credit for all of their hard work.
