Global infant nutrition supply shaken as expanded recalls follow new European toxin safety thresholds.

Nestlé has widened its infant formula recall in Europe after France lowered its allowable safety threshold for the cereulide toxin, leading the Swiss food giant to include additional batches of its Guigoz brand. The recall expansion comes even as analysts had expected no further withdrawals and reflects growing regulatory pressure on infant nutrition safety standards.

The cereulide toxin, produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus, can trigger nausea and vomiting and has been detected in ingredients sourced from a Chinese supplier used by major formula makers, including Nestlé, Danone, and Lactalis. This contamination discovery has already prompted wide recalls across dozens of countries and raised heightened concern among parents and healthcare stakeholders.

French health authorities moved to strengthen consumer protections by reducing the maximum cereulide limit after consultations with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), prompting Nestlé to voluntarily broaden its recall beyond the initial batches. Investigations are ongoing, including inquiries into potential links between some recalled products and infant deaths, although no definitive connection has been confirmed.

The broader infant formula industry is under scrutiny as recalls highlight vulnerabilities in global supply chains, particularly for third-party ingredients like arachidonic acid (ARA) oil, which has been linked to contamination events. Regulatory focus on food safety testing, toxin limits, and ingredient traceability is intensifying across the EU and other markets as authorities and consumer advocates press for clearer exposure standards and faster responses.

While Nestlé insists that its internal safety limits for cereulide remain stricter than the new EFSA guidance and that no additional countries have been added to the recall list, the extended withdrawal underscores the pace at which food safety standards are evolving. Industry watchers note that such high-profile recalls could have long-term reputational impacts and drive shifts in regulatory frameworks for infant nutrition worldwide.
