New grant program aims to end milk dumping for NY dairy farms

New York dairy farmers could soon see relief from milk dumping during emergency events, thanks to a $21.6 million grant initiative announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The Dairy Modernization Grant Program, part of Hochul’s 2024 State of the State agenda, is designed to expand on-farm milk storage and improve transport efficiency across the supply chain.

Administered by the Farm and Food Growth Fund, grants ranging from $50,000 to $250,000 will aid in upgrading storage and cooling systems, milk transfer, and farm infrastructure.

With applications open until Feb. 14, 2025, this program offers vital support to New York’s 3,000 dairy farms, the backbone of the state’s agricultural sector.
