Veteran industry expert to champion trade, sustainability, and global reputation for New Zealand’s vital dairy sector.
The New Zealand dairy industry marks a significant leadership transition with the appointment of Guy Roper as the new chair of the Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand (DCANZ). Roper brings a robust and diverse background to this pivotal role, having served as chief executive of Port Taranaki until 2021, where he was instrumental in facilitating New Zealand’s extensive dairy export supply chain. His deep understanding of the sector positions him perfectly to guide DCANZ in its mission to advance the collective interests of NZ dairy companies.
Roper’s extensive experience within the dairy sector is comprehensive, including previous roles at Fonterra, where he served as a global account director for Nestlé and as commercial director of global trade and ingredients. Furthermore, his roots in the industry run deep, having been a farmer-elected director of the former Kiwi Co-operative Dairies before its merger to form Fonterra. This blend of operational, commercial, and governance expertise makes him uniquely qualified to lead DCANZ through current and future challenges in dairy economics.
Taking over from Matt Bolger, Roper will preside over a governance group comprising CEOs and executive leaders from 11 prominent dairy companies. Collectively, these companies process over 98% of New Zealand’s milk, collaborating through DCANZ to champion the dairy industry’s interests on both national and international fronts. Roper expressed his eagerness to contribute to a sector he profoundly believes in, emphasizing the critical importance of strong leadership, especially during complex global periods.
Brendhan Greaney, Tatua chief executive, welcomed Roper, highlighting his exceptional governance capabilities, extensive industry knowledge, and fervent passion for enhancing New Zealand’s prosperity through trade. These qualities are seen as invaluable assets for DCANZ as it works to expand dairy trade opportunities and reduce barriers in international markets. The association is committed to ensuring that NZ dairy exports, which contribute significantly to the nation’s total goods trade earnings, adhere to the highest global standards.
DCANZ’s overarching mission extends to upholding New Zealand’s sterling reputation as a reliable global supplier of high-quality, safe, and sustainably produced dairy products. This involves strict adherence to efficient and globally respected food regulatory and biosecurity frameworks. Under Roper’s leadership, DCANZ will continue to champion these principles, reinforcing New Zealand’s position as a trusted leader in the international dairy sector and driving sustainable agribusiness growth.
